Simply put, It refers to techniques that can be used to improve the position of a website in the search engine results page (SERPs). In other words, what do people think about your website?

Unlike On- page SEO, off-page SEO refers to activities outside the boundaries of your website.

For this article, I will cover three critical Off Page SEO Strategies that I recommend you start implementing NOW! They are:

  • Link Building
  • Social Media
  • Social bookmarking

Having a basic understanding of both On-Page and Off-Page optimization will not only help you stay ahead of your competitors while ranking higher in the SERPs.


Off Page SEO Strategy #1 Link Building 

Link building refers to the process of getting external pages to link to a page on your website. Moz’s “Beginner’s Guide to Link Building” calls it “the process of acquiring hyperlinks from other websites to your own.

So does it work?

Well following Google’s Hummingbird, Panda and Penguin updates this strategy is no longer the only core component involved in rank boosting but it’s still a hugely valuable factor.

Again, I cannot the emphasize enough the importance of generating high-quality content on your website.

The only way people are going to be compelled to want to link to your content is by making it link-worthy

Quick Tip: The core of the whole internet architecture is CONTENT, it reigns supreme.

Google even states it on their Webmaster Guidelines “Make pages primarily for users, not for search engines.”  The go on further to state “Create a useful, information-rich website, and write pages that clearly and accurately describe your content.”

Today, link building is about deliberately seeking out and following up on opportunities to get your content and your website in front of an audience who cares. It’s about acting as an ambassador for your content and taking it where it will find success.

One of the best ways to do this by reaching out to relevant communities within your niche. You can reach out to them through social media such as Facebook Groups or the most common through Blog comments.

Guest posting is also a valid way to get links back to your website provided that you don’t do it just for links and that you don’t overdo it.

Google is smart so they also check the quality of your inbound links, they will check to see if the links are from a trusted source.

The more quality links you have, the better.


Off Page SEO Strategy #2 Social Media

One of the best ways to promote your content is through Social Media.

Your Social signals can be used as a ranking factor in the SERPs.

“Within search results, information tied to verified online profiles will be ranked higher than content without such verification, which will result in most users naturally clicking on the top (verified) results.”  Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

Your social signals are dependent on one or more of the following:

  • Number of Twitter Followers, Likes, and Retweets
  • Number of Facebook Page Likes and Comments
  • Facebook Post Shares.
  • Pinterest Pins and Repins
  • Number of Google+1’s

Choose social media sites that are most effective for your industry, and then work on posting informative, engaging content in order to get as many shares as possible.

Here three simple rules that I use for my social media marketing efforts that almost always guarantee success.

  1. First, Pay Attention. Discover what content influencers in your niche create and share. Use tools such as BuzzSumo to find the most popular content in your niche.
  2. Second, Analyze. How effective are your campaigns on social media? Monitoring and tracking is an effective way of ensuring your efforts aren’t in vain. Select the metrics that you would like to track. Important metrics to track are Engagement (comments,likes e.t.c), View and shares, traffic leads or online reviews.
  3. Lastly, Compare. What’s working? What isn’t? Use metrics to make effective decisions.

Quick Tip: The most important thing to remember when it comes to social media is about being social, don’t seem like a robot online.


Off Page SEO Strategy #3 Social Bookmarking

Social bookmarking is a way to bookmark our favorite web pages online to read them anytime and anywhere if we are connected to the internet.

Submitting your blog posts to websites such as StumbleUpon,,, and (to name a few) is a great place to start.

This can be a great way to drive traffic to your website while promoting your content.

These websites always update their content frequently and are popular with search engines because a lot of people visit them.

Depending on how frequently you participate on these websites, the higher your post engagement will be.

Sometimes it’s a good idea to give your content away for promotional reasons. This is the product you are selling, and if you want people to know about you, then this type of promotion could be very beneficial in the long run.

Off page SEO is equally as important as on-page SEO. If you want your SEO campaigns to be successful you have to do both.

The ugly painful truth about SEO is that there are no shortcuts or tricks, if your website ranks number one on the SERPs then you damn well earned it.
