Instagram ads officially become available globally at the end of September 2015. Their ads are now available to businesses of all sizes and budgets.

Unfortunately, not many business owners have the knowledge of how to setup Instagram ads. If you are bootstrapping, which most of us are, and want to learn how to run and manage you own Instagram ads then this article is meant for you.

So how popular is Instagram in Kenya?

With their increase in popularity, Instagram ads have been proven to be more successful than Facebook ads.

To create your first Instagram ad you will need Facebook’s Power Editor.

To access Power Editor, you’ll need to go to in the Chrome browser on a desktop computer.

Power Editor has numerous robust features and I would encourage you to try it. It allows you to:

  • Create custom audiences
  • Split test your ads
  • Track your conversions
  • Optimize delivery of your ads

Here is a step by step process to get you started on setting up your first Instagram Ad campaign.

Instagram Ads Step # 1: Connect Your Instagram Account

You will need to connect your Instagram account to your Facebook Page.

To do this head over to settings of your Facebook Page and click on Instagram ads.

Instagram Ads Step # 2: Install Facebook Power Editor

You can also access Power Editor through your Manage Ads Page on Facebook

Click on Manage Ads

Click on Facebook Power Editor


You will be redirected to a new window, where you will be prompted to Download Facebook Ad Accounts.

Click Download


And you’re all set up! You have successfully installed Power Editor to your browser and you can now create your first campaign.

Create A Campaign


Instagram Ads Step # 3: Create You First Ad Set

Power editor can seem very complicated at first glance. Don’t worry take baby steps, you can’t learn everything in one day.

For now, you main objective should be to get the right audience viewing and engaging with your ads. So I will take you through the basics.

First start by choosing a campaign as shown below,

Here what you need to note as you create your campaign:

  • Buying Type: (What is your budget for the campaign)
  • Objective: (What action do you want your prospect to take?)

Also when creating an Instagram ad, you will need to create an ad set.

When selecting an ad set choose a name preferably related to the A/B experiment test an example would be “Nairobi Under 35” representing the target audience for the campaign that you are creating.

Once done click the create button on the bottom left.

When you create your ad set, you will be required to fill out the following sections:

  • Budget
  • Schedule
  • Bidding
  • Audience Targeting
  • Ad Placement Options

Once you’re done you can activate your ad set;

If you filled out you campaign correctly the next step would be to upload all your changes.

You will notice on your editor dashboard a menu of functions that you can use to create your next campaign.

After you upload you changes you are pretty much done.

Power editor is a tool that is designed for advertisers who have heavy ad usage, but technically anyone can use it. It might seem complicated at fist but over time you will get the hang of it.
